Choreographer, Teacher, Dancer
KATHRYN ALTER attended Interlochen Arts Academy, graduated from Purchase Conservatory of Dance with the highest honors in 2001, and upon completion of her MFA from Hunter College in 2020, was awarded the Chairman's Award for Artistic Excellence. Her choreography and performance have been seen around the world, most recently at Arts On Site NYC, in the festival Soliloquios y Diálogos in Centro Cultural Los Talleres de Coyoacán in Mexico City, La MaMa Moves in New York City, the Kyoto Butoh Festival, and as part of the EstroGenius Festival at Cooper Union in New York City. Currently, Kathryn is a 2024/25 Fulbright Garcia Robles scholar to Mexico. She was a 2023/24 Women in Motion commissioned artist and a 2023/24 Eva Dean Dance AIR. Her work endeavors to send and receive visceral messages, offering others a new way to see something they may already know and the opportunity to reimagine their humanity. Long term relationships and collaborations are integral to her work. She and her collaborator Ty Turley have been exploring the possibilities of the integration of dance and media and the creation of virtual (https://www.kathrynalter.com/be-coming) and performance installations. She was a member of the Limón Dance Company for 15 years earning accolades such as: "Watching Ms. Alter devour space...I suddenly remembered how amazing José Limón was." (Juan Michael Porter II Dance Enthusiast,) and "Exuded a joy that made you want to get onstage and breathe the same air." (Susan L. Pena, Reading Eagle.) From 2018-2023 she was Program Director for the Limón Professional Studies Program. Kathryn teaches the Limón Company, has reconstructed the works of José Limón for Limón Dance Company, Ballet Nacional de Mexico, Ballet Am Rhein, Taller Coreográfico de UNAM, and leads workshops nationally and internationally. She has participated in three projects for the implementation of Limón4Kids in Mexico: with Saludarte (2016, 2017) and Semilleros Creativos (2023). Other credits include: 2018 Dance at Socrates Resident Artist, and 2014 recipient of a CUNY Dance Initiative residency. Alter was also a founding member of Riedel Dance Theater and danced with Alan Danielson and Kazuko Hirabayashi.
